Netherlands 2017
Amsterdam
Day 7: The big city! After super early and surprisingly efficient get-up and go, we travelled to Amsterdam for our action packed day in the Dutch capital, taking in the sights (and smells!). We started with a boat tour round the city, which has to be a highlight of the trip thanks to the amazing tour guide, who gave us a tour with his own twist of dry but hilarious humour! Fun fact: Steps leading up to a front door were a sign of social status, as each step was taxed, so the more steps you had, the wealthier you were!
Time was then spent visiting the Anne Frank Museum – whilst enjoyable is the wrong word to describe it, the whole museum was very well set up, with the scouts doing us proud, going around in their usual well mannered way. It was a very poignant visit, and makes you realise how lucky we are today.
We finally sent the scouts off for the eat out in Amsterdam challenge. Armed with 8 euros, scouts had to go and find themselves some tasty dinner. Most seemed to visit a familiar franchise (although not McDonalds or KFC!), one group had some Italian, and one even went Indonesian! All ate well, well apart from some leaders who weren’t impressed with the touristy restaurant they ended up in (never go for a place with stock images of food on the menu!!)
It doesn’t feel like we even scratched the surface of what Amsterdam has to offer, but it was great to have a whistle stop tour of the place, and it’s definitely on my list of places to revisit for longer!
Surely a day to remember for all.
