World War Remembrance Evening

In a change to the standard fireworks visit (and thank goodness as it was raining quite wonderfully), we stayed indoors to mark the centenary of the end of World War One.
Past ventures have included 2 parades to the Menin Gate ceremony in Ieper, Belgium. We have also toured around North Bristol investigating war related locations. However, tonight was altogether different.
Each Patrol was headed by a Corporal and Lance Corporal, with a few Privates added in. Their task was to visit various bases and ‘survive’ the war. Food and clothes rationing was introduced, not many sweets for a week. Cross the Belgium battlefields without getting stuck in the mud. Successfully blackout without showing any light. Crack codes and perform first aid (which got altogether harder when the blackout kicked in!!) Finally, each Patrol has to keep spirits up by singing war songs, which then morphed into some marching practice. One patrol managed to completely rewrite the tune to Tipperary, worked well!
The evening was top and tailed with acknowledgment to past Scouts from Horfield Methodist , who are commemorated on their war memorial. We also presented some videos to set the scene, include the poignant last scene from Blackadder.
