Malta 2013
…Fort Rinella
To be honest…
We only went to Fort Rinella because we could walk to it, it was reasonably priced and it killed a days activities over a massive 2 weeks of programming.
To be fair…
It was a superb highlight and excellent start to the trip! How lovely to stumble across these little gems in such tucked away and strange places. The local Southern Scouting DC remembers playing in the ruins of Fort Rinella when he was young, the gun was rusting away and the place was quite dangerous. Now it has been transformed, the gun is pink, the Fort tarted up and tons of TLC poured in. In typical Maltese fashion, they were expecting us the day before their confirmation email of Friday, but were none the less really pleased to see us and presented us with a whole host of displays and war paraphernalia presented with love and amusement and the odd element of danger, with back firing guns etc.
The video went down especially well with some, a cool underground chamber, dark and condusive to some dozing. Wonder if they rent out for overnighters…
Some lucky individuals got to fire one of the guns and Ray made the guy slightly nervous by handling the sword slightly too confidently…
Up two three…Out two three…Bang two three…Bang two three…Comparisons to Dad’s Army and Carry On were rife…
Tent pegging
The ‘big’ 100 ton gun, only fired every May, due to neighbours complaining…
The Mediterranean Film Studios, Gladiator, titantic and others were filmed here. It also has a very large tank…We met one Scouter who works there as a stunt co-ordinator, he said a certain major film star was very problematic…
