The YHA had a jam-packed day in store for us. We we in the capable hands of Constable Chris of the castle, Brother John and Lady Linda, who had a wealth of activities for us to complete throughout the day.
The morning saw the scouts carrying water to the castle, making our own bread for the banquet and a fascinating castle tour! Water carrying put scouts in the shoes of medieval water boys who bounced constantly between the wells and the castle to make sure the inhabitants remained hydrated, bathed and water-cooled! Things got arty as all sorts of wacky and wonderful breads were produced – we were told we’d be kneading them for the evening banquet! The castle tour gave us interesting insights into the history of our accomodation. Highlights were the mobile-throne cove, the prison room (now one of the dorms!) and the oubliette: a concealed dungeon below one of the dorms where troublesome townsfolk were sent to ‘disappear’…!
We managed to pull the scouts away from snowball fighting to begin the afternoon extravaganza! Everyone got stuck into some wick-ed candle making, storming the castle and Brother John’s ‘teamwork makes the dreamwork’ challenges! It turns out that as an angry Welsh peasant, the chances of you storming St Braivels castle are less likely than seeing Mike on a ferry!
After a busy day, it was time to get ready for the big feast…
