Summer Camp 2005

Isle of Wight and Rafting

It was a long hot day on the Isle of Wight. A half-hour ferry trip over from Lyndhurst to Yarmouth (not the great one the other one…) followed by a gentle (!) planned stroll along the coast to Colwell bay. Once we’d navigated steep slopes, awkward caravan parks, thick forests, precarious road junctions and an ice cream shop we did finally manage to arrive at Colwell bay. As the main ‘hub’ of the beach was still some way off we bottled out and settled down to a rather pleasant section of the beach habitated by a few other people (who quickly moved funnily enough) and rather a lot of amazingly thick, soft seaweed.

A paddle in the sea was next on the list, almost everyone dipped their toes in as it was wonderfully warm. To cries of “everyone get Mike!” there was plenty of splashing, running and dunking to which no-one escaped. Not even the highly regarded, respected (and feared) Scout Leader, the rotters…

We did get Mike though!

The walk on the way back seemed longer for some and shorter for others, quite how we do not know. We arrived back in Yarmouth though for a short 20 min exploration of this quaint seaside town. Dave was stupid enough to buy some chips and head back to the main group, how the vultures circled and dived… Thankfully Dave escaped unhurt, shame about the chips though.
