Camp Reports

Glenny Woods

by Luke

Glenny Woods was the best camp that I’ve ever been on. We arrived on Friday night and had to carry all our equipment down to the bottom field which was hard as it was really hot. After that we put up our hike tents and then explored the area. I finally climbed into my sleeping bag wearing all my clothes around midnight as I couldn’t be bothered to change into my PJs.

Saturday morning I was awake at 7.00 am which was a miracle as usually my Mum has to shout at me for an hour on school days before I even lift the duvet up. I then actually put some clean clothes on ( the first and last time ) and Richard, my patrol leader started to get breakfast ready. We had bacon sandwiches which went down well after all the exercise the night before. We then all plodded over to the flagpole for the opening ceremony and to see some of the Scouts being invested into the group including me as I recently transferred from another group. Then we were separated into groups and did various activities like fire lighting, making tea, compass work and tent pitching. My favourite was fire lighting as being a trainee teenager I liked to play with the matches.

That night after we ate, we went to Portishead swimming pool for a splash about. I accidentally hit my jaw on the side of the pool and not even the offer of chocolate helped the pain go away. The leaders sent us to bed at 10.30 pm but we fell asleep alot later ……

Sunday, we went on a hike to the Great Wall of China, well it felt that far to me as my usual exercise is brushing my teeth or eating a sandwich. That night, we were commanded to join the Cubs at the camp fire to sing. None of us were that keen but did it just to keep warm and look at the lovely flickering flames 😉 It was worth it though as we were given popcorn and hot chocolate. The Cubs went to bed and we played wide games in the woods until it was very, very dark and late.

Monday, we woke up and started to pack up our food tent which was sad. After such a busy morning, we relaxed by visiting the outdoor swimming pool at Portishead. It was nice, relaxing in the water even though it felt like Antartica at first.
On returning to camp, we had chips for tea as a treat which was great. I needed to restock on junk food as my body was becoming used to the healthy food chosen by Richard. Luckily, some members of my patrol were fussy and didn’t like what was cooked so I ended up with extra which suited me fine.

Tuesday came too quickly and our parents collected us.

Glenny Woods was brilliant as there was lots of nice food, especially the steak ( I don’t get fed that well at home !! ) and we got to stay up late.

Most importantly though, I returned to nature by not washing properly or changing my clothes for four days in order to help save the ozone layer.

Thanks to all the leaders and helpers who organised and ran the weekend.

The highlights of the camp:

Swimming

The swimming was wicked at Portishead and was a very nice pool, and I think everyone enjoyed ducking the leaders while trying to get the ball to the other scouts.Jodie, Amy and me did get the life guards number! The outdoor pool was a bit cold but myself and other scouts still managed to get in. But I got  pulled in by George and pushed in by Simon! I could have screamed for England!

Sweets

All the sweets from tuck shop where bought mmmmm! They were very nice.

The supposedly 7.2 miles Walk!

The walk was really fun and it was wicked. It as fun when walking through Noahs Ark Zoo Farm and we saw camels and my group went on the trampolines, when you  were meant to stay to the dotted line when walking through, whoops! We also saw a deer, while walking. Although Finlay and Blair missed it as they were puling down a tree! We had to walk past a home of Honey Bees, and Amy had a fight with one, as it got caught in her hair! Also we had  to climb over a fence and make our way through an over grown step over onto a main road, god knows what drivers thought as they were driving along, a group of people  raging out of the bushes! We met up with another group by the cows and one of them made a first move on Jodie by going to lick her but we all grabbed her away it was so funny! After getting told by Bob we where half way about 20 times, when we were only about a quarter of the way, we all had our hopes up! We made it back to the camp site. As the first group back we were pleased as we were the last group to leave!

Food

All my patrols food was very nice so special thanks to Blair for choosing it.

Games

German Spotlight was very funny as I  was walking back down after being caught and fell in a rabbit hole and went sliding down the hill, But damn that was fun! But u cant lame me it was pitch black!

Last night

The last night was the best as the leaders weren?t close to us so we could be nosy as they had moved up to the hut. We had toasted marshmallows and thanks to Clive he went and bought us all chips! The next morning we were woke by a Dave smashing a spathula against a frying pan. And That was ANNOYING!

Overall it was a very funfilled camp thanks to all the leaders!

Glenny Woods

Glenny was wicked we had brilliant weather and lush sun! (most of the time) and all the scouts/ cubs enjoyed it.

On Friday night we had to carry down all the tents and bags and things andI found a short cut of getting to the bottom, (sliding all the way down the river!)only I tried it though, and it hurt! When we got all the things down we put up all the patrol tents mine was the best!!! Daisy you were useless trying to help us!

We had tea at some time and when I went to do the washing up Geoff spilt hot water on my leg! Then we put up our sleeping tents and I had my own because I didn?t fit in my original one! It was a one-man tent that didn?t stay up! Me drew, Blair, Rosa and Bex put our tents the furthest away from the leaders and other scouts, to be annoying but by the end of the campwe all wished that we hadn?t of done that because most of the time we couldn?t find our tent!We went to sleep at about 3 am and woke up at 4 the next morning(something we regretted!)me drew and Blair attempted to put my tent back up, But failed miserably! We had breakfast at about 7 when none of the leaders were awake, except Geoff .

We had a rope bridge made for us, which was wicked, and a lot of fun! We did activities like putting up tents and map reading (yawn) and things like that before the rope bridge! Later on that day we went swimming and it was leaders vs. scouts/ cubs in a fat game of piggy in the middle kind of! We went to bed sort of early that night because we had a hike the next day!

On Sunday we woke up at about 7/8 and had breakfast, and got ready for the hike. We set of at about 12 my patrol had Daisy and Ray, Richards?s patrol had Dave and Blair?s had Cllive and bob (I think!) the hike was about 7.3 miles and was ???.. different!

There were no proper footpaths and my patrol got lost in a fat field with waist high grass! It didn?t help that we got lost at the beginning and went completely the wrong way (RAY!!) we went through Noah?s ark and we saw the camels! Even Dave got a bit lost (and he organised the hike!) so we weren?t the only ones!

We got back at about 6 pm (thank goodness for Daisy otherwise we would probably still be there!)

but we still got back after climbing over barbed wire, wading through seas of grass and walking through sheep infested fields!  But it was very???? different! Also that day the Beavers came up and sat around the campfire singing songs! At the end of the day the cubs and scouts sat around and did our campfire songs, There was a crazy moose!

The next day the cubs left and we had to carry up all the tents and things to be taken home. We went swimming that afternoon in an outdoor pool, which was flipping freezing!  But I got daisy!!! Most people got out straight away but it was colder outside! After another night at the camp fire and carrying fat logs down to gain time to stay at the fire(and after dropping a fat one on my toe BLAIR!!!) we went to sleep (well?..most of us did?..kind of??not really!)

The next morning the leaders woke us up with a saucepan and a spoon

(how annoying can you get! A simple get up would do!) Then we had breakfast and we cooked all of our food!!! Mmmmmmmmmmmm!!!

The weekend was a big success and thank you to all the leaders for organising it!
