Winter Camp 2025
Youlbury
This year’s winter camp took us to Oxfordshire, where Scout Adventures Youlbury (oldest permanent Scout campsite in the world, don’t you know!) was our base for the weekend.
Sadly the gods of the A34 decided a punctual arrival to Youlbury would not be on the cards, and after a 4 hour plus journey, the coach finally arrived. A big well done to all of the Scouts, who put up with the traffic jam with minimal fuss, to the extent the coach driver was singing their praises after a particulaularly challenging drive!
An early get up on Saturday marked the start of a busy day of activities; 3G swing, tomahawk throwing and hugh all aboard, in dry but chilly conditions. Following time to warm up and visit the well-stocked shop, we prepared for our Bugsy Malone, 1920s themed evening soiree! Everyone threw themselves into the evening’s activities, and fully embraced the theme, making for an excellent night!
Making the most of an almost deserted and mainly woodland site, the Scouts played a 1920s gangster themed edition of the trading wide game. Scouts quickly learned the cutthroat world of business as they brought and sold commododities to boost profit as the game progressed. This was not without the hindrance of roaming police and taxmen, ensuring teams paid their fair way! A run of counterfeit Lous Armstrong’s sent markets crashing towards the great depression, however luckily all teams did exceedingly well, and had a great morning striking deals. Lunch was then cooked on altar fires, before camp close and investitures.
This year’s winter camp saw the investitures of Ada, Olly and Lincoln to the 62nd Scout Troop. In usual 62nd fashion, we aim to make investitures a little different, and with the camp theme being Bugsy Malone, it seemed only appropriate to conclude with some welcome pies to the face!!
